If you are a fan of Zebrahead’s former albums, then DO NOT buy this. If you are a fan of Zebrahead concerts, I also must insist: DO NOT ATTEND. The new album simply sucks when compared to their past (and rather unique) sound. Had I known that by purchasing this new album I would have lowered my musical standards to that of my 16 year-old-sister, I would NEVER have wasted the cash. The same goes for their shows: I’ve seen them five times and the first four were AMAZINGLY entertaining, but their bubblegum pop, “new” sound was all that I was provided with at the last show–imagine my disappointment. Save your cash, your time, and your respect for this band by buying something else.

Michael Brecker - Tales from the Hudson [1996]

Michael Brecker, a major influence on today’s young saxophonists, shows off his own influences a bit throughout this fine modern straight-ahead set. Brecker sounds surprisingly like Stanley Turrentine on parts of “Midnight Voyage,” and otherwise displays his roots in Ernie Watts and John Coltrane. With the exception of Don Grolnick’s “Willie T.,” the music on the CD is comprised of group originals (five by the leader) and falls into the 1990s mainstream of jazz. While the tenor saxophonist has plenty of blowing space (really letting loose on the exciting closer, “Cabin Fever”), Pat Metheny is mostly pretty restrained (in a Jim Hall bag) except for his wild solo on guitar synth during “Song for Bilbao.” Pianist Joey Calderazzo starts out sounding a bit like McCoy Tyner on “Slings and Arrows” before his own musical personality is revealed. When Tyner himself plays on “Song for Bilbao” (one of two guest appearances), one can certainly tell the difference between master and pupil. All of Michael Brecker’s recordings as a leader (as opposed to his cameos as a sideman on pop records) are easily recommended and show why he is considered a giant by many listeners. When I first heard lead single “Crowded”, I was hella excited (or at least somewhate excited) about Jeannie Ortega’s debut NO PLACE LIKE BKLYN. Unfortunately, upon the opportunity to hear the album before purchasing it, I can’t help but to say not only was I extremely disappointed, I also have to say this is one of the worst albums I have heard so far this year. I don’t like to trash any artist unfairly, but this debut should’ve been so much better and it falls into the cliche where the lead single is not only the best track on the entire album but also the only truly competent performance.

Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist [2007]

Way back before the Smashing Pumpkins were superstars, right around the release of Siamese Dream, it was already an open secret that they were not a democracy; they were a dictatorship, ruled under the iron fist of singer/songwriter/guitarist/conceptualist Billy Corgan. He came up with their sound, equal parts metal and dream pop, he wrote the songs, and, according to most reports, he recorded almost all the guitars and bass on their albums, masterminding their sound down to the littlest details. Anybody that meticulous was also sharp enough to know the value of image too, so Corgan knew it was better to present the Smashing Pumpkins as a full-fledged band, not a solo project, and he came up with a diverse lineup ideally matched for the alt-rock ’90s: he was the skinny misfit leader, surrounded by female bassist D’Arcy, Japanese-American guitarist James Iha, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, who came across like an old metalhead on the prowl for freaky chicks. They didn’t look like a band; they looked like the idea of a band, which was appealing in its own right, but for as photogenic as they were, the reason the Pumpkins turned into stadium-conquering monsters was Corgan’s outsized music, which was nothing if not deliberately, self-consciously dramatic. His commitment to grand gestures was cemented when he disbanded the Smashing Pumpkins at the turn of the millennium, about a year after former Hole bassist Melissa auf der Maur replaced D’Arcy and just as Iha was beginning to bolt. The group was beginning to fracture, but the retirement of the band’s name seemed like confirmation that the Pumpkins were a concrete idea for Corgan, that they were a band that served a particular moment in time, and once that moment in time had passed, so had the band. The very fact that he pretty much was the Pumpkins lent this move integrity, since it was clear that Billy could keep the ball rolling, ushering new musicians in and out under the same moniker with nobody but the hardcore being any wiser, but instead of taking that easy road, he decided to make a clean break and pursue other projects…. Ice Cube - In the Movies [2007]

Since Priority’s 2003 compilation Greatest Hits grabbed some of the most important tracks this West Coast G gave to soundtracks, their 2007 Ice Cube collection In the Movies isn’t the grand discography helper it could have been. It’s best for the faithful fans who bought all the albums but not all the soundtracks Cube landed on or those who don’t mind a little redundancy as long as they get to take a nostalgic ride back to the ’90s when the hip-hop soundtrack was king. Tracks from Murder Was the Case (”Natural Born Killaz”), Boyz N the Hood (”How to Survive in South Central”), I Got the Hook Up (”Ghetto Vet”), The Players Club (”‘We Be Clubbin’”), and Friday (”Friday”) prove Cube was on the best of them, often with the soundtrack’s key cut. The rest of the set is more archival than vital, but there’s nothing here that suggests the rapper was taking the Hollywood money and running. Even the low point — “Right Here, Right Now,” the collaboration with dance producer Paul Oakenfold for the Blade 2 soundtrack — deserves a C+, and while including the 1991 track “The Wrong Nigga to Fuck Wit” on the collection because it landed in the 2001 film Scary Movie 2 seems like cheating, it is an amazing cut. Natalie Cole - Unforgettable: With Love [1991]

A major change of direction for Natalie Cole, Unforgettable found the singer abandoning the type of R&B/pop she’d been recording since 1975 in favor of jazz-influenced pre-rock pop along the lines of Nat King Cole’s music. It was a surprising risk that paid off handsomely — both commercially and artistically. Naysayers who thought that so radical a change would be commercial suicide were proven wrong when the outstanding Unforgettable sold a shocking five million units. Quite clearly, this was an album Cole was dying to make. Paying tribute to her late father on “Mona Lisa,” “Nature Boy,” “Route 66,” and other gems that had been major hits for him in the 1940s and early ’50s, the 41-year-old Cole sounds more inspired than she had in well over a decade. On the title song, overdubbing was used to make it sound as though she were singing a duet with her father — dishonest perhaps, but certainly enjoyable. Thankfully, standards and pre-rock pop turned out to be a primary direction for Cole, who was a baby when the title song became a hit for her father in 1951. Review by Alex Henderson @ allmusic.com

Joe Satriani - Engines of Creation [2000]

With Crystal Planet, Joe Satriani made an effective return to his signature sound following the erratic blues-rock detour of Joe Satriani. For the follow-up to Crystal Planet, Satriani is once again exploring novel territory in an effort to keep his music fresh, and Engines of Creation is the biggest stylistic shift he’s made yet — to electronic music. Satriani’s guitar is still the focal point of the music, to be sure, but while his virtuosity is obvious, it’s often submerged in the new demands of this musical idiom. That isn’t a surprise either, given that Satriani is one of the few guitar shredders whose taste and musicality have never been in question. But fans who simply want to hear him rip through his typical jaw-dropping solos may be disappointed (even though, in the end, there are more than a few solos), as will those guitar fans who reflexively disdain all sounds electronic. Having defended it, though, Engines of Creation isn’t a total success. While the music is certainly influenced by techno and electronica, it probably won’t appeal to listeners coming from those arenas; overall, it simply isn’t as adventurous as much genuine electronica, avoiding complex backing rhythms or edgy sonic textures; nor is it as hypnotic, meandering or drifting aimlessly at times instead of moving into trancelike states of consciousness. Plus, Satriani’s songs are often more traditional than they may seem upon first listen; many of the compositions are based on repeated themes and riffs and standard rock-song structures, switching between recurring, identifiable sections rather than gradually building and unfolding. However, the album can also be quite inventive. Satriani has challenged himself to find ways of coaxing totally new sounds from his guitar, and he weaves them seamlessly into the futuristic electronic soundscapes. Moreover, his melodies and main themes have rarely been this angular and off-kilter, meaning that exploring this music has indeed helped Satriani refresh and re-imagine his signature sound. Even the pieces that aren’t ultimately that revolutionary are still intriguing, since very few musicians have the technical training and innate sense of musicality required to mine this territory. Overall, Engines of Creation is a brave and sporadically successful experiment, and it’s also a promising new direction for Satriani should he choose to continue this vein of exploration and take it out even farther. Andrew Bird’s Bowl Of Fire - Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs [2005]

Andrew Bird is a previously unimaginable combination of songwriter, violinist, guitarist, vocalist and whistler. His unfailingly unique and striking music has been dumbfounding us for years. Bird’s first studio album in nearly two years, The Mysterious Production of Eggs, is his second on Righteous Babe Records. The album follows Weather Systems, his critically-acclaimed mini-LP, released in spring 2003.

The recording sessions for Mysterious Production saw Bird scrap the album three times and travel between studios in Chicago, Los Angeles and his own home studio on a farm in Northern Illinois. The album took final shape with the production help of David Boucher, whose credits include Paul Westerberg, Lisa Loeb, and Randy Newman. Bird plays most of the instruments on Mysterious Production, and is joined by a handful of special guests complimenting his already lush sonic palette. The results are magnificent, a powerhouse of a record dealing with nothing less than the mysteries of childhood, creativity and modern science - epic in scope and minute in detail.

Equally impressive is Bird’s solo live show at which, with the aid of a sampling pedal, the songwriter takes his often dense, orchestrated recordings and rewrites them anew each night, adding hypnotic layers of instruments to his vocals and other-worldly whistling - you have to see it to believe it.

Billy Corgan - TheFutureEmbrace [2005]

Billy Corgan sounded happy, relaxed, and refreshed on Mary Star of the Sea, the 2003 debut from his first post-Smashing Pumpkins project, Zwan, which just goes to show that art doesn’t always reflect the mindset of the artist. Zwan imploded in a matter of months after the release of Mary, and ever since then Corgan was on mission to let the world know that his time in the band was the worst time of his life, telling the world how perfectly awful and nasty the rest of the group is every time he spoke to reporters. Not only did he purge himself of the band in the press, but he bared his soul in a starkly confessional blog on myspace.com, where he revealed more than most needed to know about everything from his childhood to the heyday of the Pumpkins. It was all part of a spiritual and creative rebirth that continued with 2005’s The Future Embrace, his first solo album. Abandoning the bright, fuzzy guitars of Zwan and never returning to the dense, heavy neo-psychedelia of the Pumpkins at their peak, Corgan constructs The Future Embrace with drum machines, synthesizers, and brittle, heavily treated guitars that echo into infinity on each track. Musically, it’s closest to Adore, yet it’s a distant cousin: if that album hinted at ’80s synth rock and goth, this re-creates the spirit and sound of 1986, right down to the robotic pulse of the rhythms, the cold, slick surface of the production, and the brooding, self-absorbed atmosphere. It’s not so much a progression as it an attempt to hit the restart button and begin all over again. Corgan not only returns to the music of his teenage years here, but his dramatic, emotive lyrics, which articulate his feelings far more directly than they have in the past, are terminally adolescent (and seem even more so when printed in the liner notes, where certain phrases are grandly emphasized via all capital letters). While the music mirrors the roiling emotions of his lyrics quite well — “The Cameraeye” is tense and restless, “Pretty, Pretty Star” is a gentle sigh — Corgan is more interested in texture than craft here, sacrificing hooks for mood music. Which is a roundabout way of saying that there aren’t too many memorable songs here (and it’s the reason why his cover of the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody” works: it’s the only song here that not only has a strong melody, but the only one that has forward momentum; all the other cuts sustain one mood from beginning to end). But, to criticize The Future Embrace for not being chock-full of hits and hooks, the way Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie were, is to miss the point: like his confessional blogs, this album is a way for Corgan to sort things out and start again. Consequently, it’s for those fans who want to follow his journey, either out of empathy, curiosity, sympathy, or perhaps because they can also relate. Such a small-scale record seems a little odd coming from a rocker who was intent on conquering the world in the early ’90s — and surely there will be many who liked Smashing Pumpkins yet will never warm to this, either because of its electro-goth sound or because, like Trent Reznor on With Teeth, Corgan doesn’t quite seem able to break out an angst-ridden lyrical rut — but he no longer is concerned with being the biggest or the best. Corgan’s exploring his own little world, one that may have a more selective appeal than either Smashing Pumpkins or Zwan, but will nevertheless resonate to those who bother to regularly check in on his space on myspace. Emmylou Harris - Pieces of the Sky [2004]

Emmylou Harris’s 1975 major-label debut unveiled the formula that she would revisit numerous times throughout the decade: a melding of traditional country’s honesty, folk music’s heart, and country-rock’s punch. Her choice of material followed a similar curve–everything from Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette, and the Louvin Brothers to the Beatles and Shel Silverstein. Former Elvis sidemen James Burton, Glen D. Hardin, and Ron Tutt along with guests like Ricky Skaggs, fiddler Richard Greene, and pianist Bill Payne of Little Feat form a formidable supporting cast. What’s most impressive is Harris’s versatility–she moves from delicate acoustic ballads to buoyant two-steppers to lavish string arrangements without ever sounding overmatched. She even takes a very personal tale like Dolly Parton’s wonderful “Coat of Many Colors” and makes it her story. She may have inherited the band and the vision from her late mentor Gram Parsons, but the shimmering soprano voice is all her own.

Inspired by his primal scream therapy with Dr. Arthur Janov, Lennon created a harrowing set of unflinchingly personal songs, laying out all of his fears and angers for everyone to hear. It was a revolutionary record — never before had a record been so explicitly introspective, and very few records made absolutely no concession to the audience’s expectations, daring the listeners to meet all the artist’s demands. Which isn’t to say that the record is unlistenable. Lennon’s songs range from tough rock & rollers to piano-based ballads and spare folk songs, and his melodies remain strong and memorable, which actually intensifies the pain and rage of the songs. Not much about Plastic Ono Band is hidden. Lennon presents everything on the surface, and the song titles — “Mother,” “I Found Out,” “Working Class Hero,” “Isolation,” “God,” “My Mummy’s Dead” — illustrate what each song is about, and charts his loss of faith in his parents, country, friends, fans, and idols. It’s an unflinching document of bare-bones despair and pain, but for all its nihilism, it is ultimately life-affirming; it is unique not only in Lennon’s catalog, but in all of popular music. The Killers - Sawdust [2007]

With only two studio releases behind them, it might surprise some to hear that the Killers had enough material to release a b-sides and rarities CD only five years after forming, but this is definitely no all-filler/no-killer collection, instead containing a mittful of legitimately strong and worthwhile songs. There are four never-before-released Killer songs on Sawdust, including “Tranquilize,” featuring rock legend Lou Reed on half of the vocals, a number that is filled with a Queen-affected operatic touch. The previously unreleased “Shadowplay”–a Joy Division cover–unfortunately pales compared to the original, while “Leave Your Bourbon at the Door” is easily the summit of the CD; a longtime live favorite, the song’s despair and urgency is a must-have for any Killer fan. Also noteworthy is an outtake from the Hot Fuss sessions called “Under the Gun,” a driving melody with a memorable chorus that feels like a Killers classic. Lesser-known tracks gathered together on this compilation include “Move Away”–first heard on the Spiderman 3 soundtrack–which is straight-up U2-circa-Vertigo era, but still exciting to listen to. Some previously released b-sides are cover tunes that provide musical whimsy, but not much more: the trad-country “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” which was made famous by Kenny Rogers, while the impassioned “Romeo and Juliet” tune–written by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits fame–is nearly mimicked by Flowers, and serves little more purpose than providing homage to a wonderfully written melody and tale.

Black Lips - Good Bad Not Evil [2007]

Some bands strive to explore new musical territory each time they go into the recording studio, while others are content to follow the same path throughout their career as long as they’re improve in some way each time out. The Black Lips seem to be following the latter approach, though you’d be forgiven for not noticing the stylistic differences between their fourth studio album, Good Bad Not Evil, and their earlier efforts. The Black Lips continue to split the difference between Back from the Grave-era garage stomp and the darker throb of post-punk noise merchants like the Fall, but as befits the title, Good Bad Not Evil brings a bit more sunshine into the mix, and the deeper undercurrents of this music come more from the performances than the production and recording, which is clear and crisp by this group’s murky standards. Jared Swilley’s bass is high up in the mix, carrying a good share of the melodies and adding plenty of minor key tension, while guitarists Cole Alexander and Ian St. Pe use the extra room to shore up the high end with plenty of cheap guitar bashing and Joe Bradley’s primal drumming holds the whole thing in place. Good Bad Not Evil finds the Black Lips going for a bit more obvious humor on tunes like “Navajo” and the country-accented “How Do You Tell a Child That Someone Has Died” (I said they were funny, not tasteful), and there’s a playful tone to “Bad Kids” and “Veni Vidi Vici” that’s lighter than you might expect from this band. But longtime fans looking for the Black Lips’ patented low-tech rumble will be rewarded with “I Saw a Ghost (Lean),” “Cold Hands,” and “Slime and Oxygen,” which are just as unwholesome as you could wish for. Good Bad Not Evil isn’t a major leap forward for the Black Lips, but it shows their sound is slowly but surely evolving, and they still rock with a nasty enthusiasm that’s bold and compelling; this is quality stuff for your next black light party.

Prodigy - The Fat of the Land [1997]

Few albums were as eagerly anticipated as The Fat of the Land, the Prodigy’s long-awaited follow-up to Music for the Jilted Generation. By the time of its release, the group had two number one British singles with “Firestarter” and “Breathe” and had begun to make inroads in America. The Fat of the Land was touted as the album that would bring electronica/techno to a wide American audience; in Britain, the group already had a staggeringly large following that was breathlessly awaiting the album. The Fat of the Land falls short of masterpiece status, but that isn’t because it doesn’t deliver. Instead, it delivers exactly what anyone would expect: intense hip-hop-derived rhythms, imaginatively reconstructed samples, and meaningless shouted lyrics from Keith Flint and Maxim. Half of the album does sound quite similar to “Firestarter,” especially when Flint is singing. Still, Liam Howlett is an inventive producer, and he can make empty songs like “Smack My Bitch Up” and “Serial Thrilla” kick with a visceral power, but he is at his best on the funky hip-hop of “Diesel Power” (which is driven by an excellent Kool Keith rap) and “Funky Shit,” as well as the mind-bending neo-psychedelia of “Narayan” (featuring guest vocals by Crispian Mills of Kula Shaker) and the blood-curdling cover of L7’s “Fuel My Fire,” which features vocals by Republica’s Saffron. All those guest vocalists mean something — Howlett is at his best when he’s writing for himself or others, not his group’s own vocalists. “Firestarter” and all of its rewrites capture the fire of the Prodigy at their peak, and the remaining songs have imagination that give the album weight. The Fat of the Land doesn’t have quite enough depth or variety to qualify as a flat-out masterpiece, but what it does have to offer is damn good.

Scissor Sisters - Ta-Dah [2006]

The first Scissor Sisters album was one of the catchiest debuts of the new millennium, but also one of the best-crafted. All camp on the surface but with plenty of substance underneath, it succeeded because the group wrote fantastic songs and backed them with excellent productions, usually in the vein of their biggest pop/dance heroes, from the Bee Gees to George Michael. If the follow-up, Ta-Dah, doesn’t reach as high as its predecessor, it’s certainly not the fault of some spot-on arrangements by head producer Babydaddy. Soundtracking his own mythical night at Studio 54 circa 1978, Babydaddy’s Discoball Jazzfest Studio in New York City pumps out tracks gloriously in debt to the Bee Gees (of course), Elton John (although not on the track he contributes piano to), the Rolling Stones’ brassy late-’70s stompers, electro-disco arena rock (if there is such a thing), and some sort of ’70s disco hokum that features a very talented Gina Gershon on jew’s-harp. Similarities to their debut are much easier to find than differences, although the songs aren’t quite as memorable (except the single “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’”) and Ta-Dah is slightly samey in comparison. (The debut ranged for influences as late as 1987, and flaunted a tougher, leaner sound.) Still, Scissor Sisters remain consummate masters of their material; the chord changes on the ballad “Land of a Thousand Words” defy listeners to not think of a glittering discoball, which is precisely the right image to be conjured.

The Arista debut of Carlos Santana and band gives fans of the soulful guitar vet two albums in one, but it’s a decidedly good-news, bad-news proposition. First, there’s a fine collection of late-’90s-model Santana–tastefully tooled songs driven by Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms (”[Da Le] Taleo,” “Africa Bamba,” “Migra,” “Primavera,” and the emotionally charged instrumental “El Farol”) that allow Carlos plenty of elbowroom for his passionate soloing. Then there’s the collection of tracks featuring a lineup of de rigueur alternative and hip-hop stars, including Dave Matthews, Everlast, Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Eagle Eye Cherry. To their credit, Matthews (”Love of My Life”) and Eagle Eye Cherry (”Wishing It Was”) muster enough chemistry to make the fusion work. But the rest of the collaborations feel like an unnecessary stretch to reach out to a younger demographic that El Jefe has little trouble attracting on his own terms.

After a handful of independent albums, the guys in Yellowcard got signed to a major label and put out their latest album, Ocean Avenue. Now, the fact that I gave this album five stars will probably make some people say, “Oh, he must be one of those young kids from the TRL generation that loves pop/punk crap. It figures.” Well, that’s not how it is at all (I’m 23 and I don’t even watch TRL — or MTV, actually). I basically call `em as I see `em, and I rarely give anything five stars, but this album deserves it.

I remember seeing Yellowcard performing the title track on The Tonight Show a few months ago, and I asked, “There’s a violinist in here?” I love strings, but you have to admit that seeing a violinist in a punk band doesn’t happen every day. But the violins do actually work extremely well with the other instruments that the band lays down (see “Breathing”).

Muse - Absolution [2003]

I’ve recently discovered this little-known UK band, Muse, and I’m blown away by almost every aspect of this release. The music is heavy alternative, but with a production and songwriting expertise that takes it all to a new area of exploration. The band’s driving force is classically oriented progressions played by guitars, pianos, drums, and more guitars. All the while, Matt Bellamy bellows his amazing melodic impressions over the whole thing.

Straight away, something needs to be addressed. This band and its singer, despite the nitpicking disclaimers other reviewers have tried to make, sounds remarkably similar to old Radiohead (The Bends, OK Computer in particular). Matt Bellamy, in fact, could be a stand-in on any Radiohead tour. I actually did research to see of Bellamy was really Thom Yorke masquerading in a front band. That’s how much they sound alike, bottom line. You can try to compare and contrast abstract and subtle approaches to style that differ, but the reality is if someone would’ve told me this was an unreleased Radiohead record from 1997, I would’ve believed them, no questions asked.

However, this isn’t an entirely fair comparison. I also would’ve said of this fictional 1997 Radiohead release, “Wow, Thom’s singing range has really expanded…and the music’s gotten far more complex…and the production is more intense and intelligent than other Radiohead records…”

That all means that Absolution actually blows by any early Radiohead comparisons that others would make. So what if Matt Bellamy sounds just like Thom Yorke? He sounds *better* than Tom Yorke. So what if the chord progressions are similar to OK Computer’s monolithic vamp sections? Absolution’s are far more accessible and integrated into the songs, rather than treated as special musical bridges (as in OK Computer). Bottom line there? They do Radiohead better than Radiohead, especially now, while Thom and the boys are off experimenting with German euro-trash techno, the stuff that Aphex Twin has been doing better than them for years.

This is also an unfair comparison because Muse incorporates a far greater span of influence into their music than Radiohead (or any modern band trying to do this). I hear tons of Queen in their music, as well as hints of ELO, especially in the vocal arrangements. It’s also evident that Bellamy has spent some time with the classical composers - Rachmaninoff, Puccini, Chopin for example. Their melodies permeate his writing - and I love every minute of it.

The songs are all astounding. The melodies are haunting, the production fresh and very unique. My only complaint is that the sonics aren’t particularly good. There are times where the mix is so huge and distorted that it’s hard to even pick out what they are trying to do. At the same time, music like this sort of needs that to sound “right.” These same songs recorded in pristine settings would probably sound far more stale than the raw genius portrayed on Absolution.

Should have bought it from Amazon, but we were going to be in Orlando the day it came out and we were at the Virgin megastore in Downtown Disney so I bought it there and paid $15 for it. Well, can’t complain really, it is an awesome album and it is what I’m listening to right now. Just saw them live last night and they kicked major booty. They have come a long way just since April and their fan base is growing. I wish people wouldn’t compare them to Panic because they are nothing like them. They are 200% better, maybe more.

Incubus - A Crow Left of the Murder [2004]

Many mainstream listeners will know of the Southern Californian band Incubus only for their pop-rock radio hits Drive and Wish You Were Here. The band has much more to offer, however, and prove this once again with their latest studio release A Crow Left of the Murder. Yet again Incubus has lived up to guitarist Mike Einziger’s rock and roll philosophy that “if you make the same record twice, even if everyone likes it, you’ve failed.” It is Incubus’ admirable ability to reinvent itself with each record that keeps the hardcore fans coming back for more.

For this latest effort, they worked with critically acclaimed producer Brendan O’Brien of Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam fame. The influence of O’Brien is clearly heard on A Crow Left of the Murder, with the album managing to capture the raw energy and sound of a live show, without sounding messy or under-produced. The lyrical content of the songs is also reminiscent of Rage and Pearl Jam, but whether or not this can be attributed to O’Brien or simply the current political climate is debatable.

Neil Case is a recording artist and producer who transformed an early love for music into a successful career in the music business. This soundtrack serves up a collision of musical styles, as if the coolest radio stations of Tokyo and New York had suddenly melded into a giant hybrid. The Teriyaki Boyz’ opening title track is typical: brilliant production by the Neptunes, East-meets-West mood, more hipness than you can shake a stick at. The Japanese hip-hop group’s other offering here, “Cho Large,” isn’t quite as good but fortunately it’s the rare lame-ish track on a CD that overall keeps things on overdrive. Highlights include DJ Shadow’s collaboration with Mos Def, “Six Days (Remix)”; Japanese girl surf experts 5.6.7.8’s (already familiar to Kill Bill fans) and their uproarious “The Barracuda”; Evil Nine’s “Restless,” which has the kind of monstrous bass line the Chemical Brothers would kill for; and Atari Teenage Riot’s awesome display of digital-hardcore aggro, “Speed” (have these guys ever been used in Dance Dance Revolution?). Tenacious D - Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny [SOUNDTRACK] [2006]

The answer to the above question is - sadly - no. But since the D are in fact the greatest band on earth, I won’t complain too much. In short, this is not album I hoped for. As a follow-up to their classic debut, this disc falls far short. That’s not to say it isn’t worth picking up though. It definitely rocks, and Jack’s voice is as awesome as ever.

The frequent gripes about the short duration of most of the tracks (and the entire CD) are true. But it is worth remembering that if you remove all the spoken-word bits from the first album, the total running time isn’t that much longer. Many of the tracks found here exist mainly to counterpoint the plot of the movie.

This CD is not without it’s moments. The opening track, “Kickapoo,” must be recognized as a Tenacious D classic. And even though “History” has been well known for years to devotees of the D, I am very glad to have a great rendition of it on an album. “Beelzeboss (The Final Showdown)” is another great track - even if it loses a bit outside the context of the movie.

Even the lesser tracks are growing on me as I listen to it more. I think I had to get past the first few listens, in order to accept that it simply is not as great as their debut. That album is such a supremely awesome piece of work; I hoped the D would follow it up with something equal. I was pleased to see the album debut in Billboard’s Top Ten - I hope that Jack and Kyle continue their reign and record more music.

Boys Night Out - Trainwreck [2005]

this is the sophmore album from the canadian band, boysnightout and they survived. this album is alot more diverse than their first by straying away from the cliche screamo sound into a more broader, mature sound. no doubt, this is boysnightout but just more mature. similiar to brand new’s “deja entendu”, this is one of those albums you can get lost in and take you on an emotional ride. as everyone knows this is a concept album about a man who kills his wife in his sleep and then the story goes from there and is quite a disturbing one. i won’t go into detail, you’ll have to listen to it and create your own version of what’s goin on. all in all, this is solid album that sounds similiar to their first but with a “bigger” sound and a minimum amount of screaming. i suggest if you’re huge fan of the first, download some of this stuff first and go from there.

Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E. [1997]

Incubus is now riding a wave after their Make Yourself album, so they have re-released Fungus Amongus and Science. There is nothing different than the CD, which was previously released, but the CD itself is simply great. Then never rerecorded Calgone, which was cut suddenly four minutes into the track with a speech about who’s fault the cutting of the track was. Mainstream songs in an album before anyone knew about them! Full of great funny vocals, rock, unique tracks, like Magic Medicine which is a fantastic track for those of you that like turntablists! Some other great songs on the CD are Favorite Things, Calgone, and New Skin (which a live version appeared on Family Values 98). Another song to note is A Certain Shade of Green, which is a very sarcastically funny song of how slow things move in the singer’s world. Even the hidden track after Calgone is hysterically funny, original and must be heard!

Black Keys - Big Come Up [2002]

Take a big chunk of blues rock, throw it in a sack with some Cream-era Eric Clapton, a bit of Jimi Hendrix, a pinch of Stevie Ray Vaughn and a hint of Creedence. Shake vigorously, deep fry until extra-crunchy.

Akron, Ohio duo The Black Keys followed just this recipe for their minimalist debut album, with results that are nothing short of amazing.

Guitarist/vocalist Dan Auerbach’s fingers canter up and down blues scales with ease, and his fuzz dial is obviously set to “11″. His sandpapery pipes sound as if he’s guzzled whisky and puffed filterless Camels for far longer than his 20-some-odd years would allow. This guy has no business be able to sing like this.

Auerbach is perfectly complemented by Patrick Carney’s enthusiastic pounding of the skins, which is never, ever relegated to just providing a background beat. As producer, Carney is also largely to thank for the Keys’s distinctive gritty bootleg sound that sounds as if you’re spinning a dusty 45 unearthed in the back of some record shop.

The pair come barreling out of the gate with the very first track, “Busted”, an energetic number that immediately gives notice to listeners that this band is about scorching, unapologetic blues.

From there, they move into the down-and dirty “Do the Rump” and on to the slightly Creedence-ish “I’ll Be Your Man.” A few tracks later is another straight-up blues song, “Run Me Down”, which leads into “Leavin’ Trunk”, an incredible song that sounds like it could have been an undiscovered Cream gem. Then it’s into the ultra-fuzzed out “Heavy Soul”. Their cover of The Beatles’ “She Said She Said” is nothing short of amazing. It is the perfect cover — reimagining a classic while remaining true to its heart and soul.

The album wraps up with “Brooklyn Bound”, another masterful blues rock number that sounds like something you only hear on classic radio stations at like 2:00 a.m. Actually this is technically the second-to-last song, but the real last song, “240 Years Before Your Time” is just 4 minutes of slow, dreamy electric guitar noodling followed by 20 minutes of silence. I hate these kind of filler tracks, and thankfully it’s a mistake the Keys didn’t repeat in their next two albums.

There are several songs I didn’t mention, but not because they are in any way bad. Indeed, there’s not a shoddy number on the album (except the last pseudo-song”). You definitely get your money’s worth with these tunes. The Black Keys are definitely one of the most significant recent music finds for this die-hard blues and classic rock fan. I thought they didn’t make music like this any more. I’m glad I was wrong.

Xiu Xiu - Women as Lovers [2008]

This album is a showcase of all the things that I hate about Xiu Xiu, and none of the things that I love about them. It’s noisy just for the heck of it, almost completely non-melodic, and basically a big spastic mess. If that’s why you love Xiu Xiu, then feel free to disregard this review. But for those of us who like our music at least a LITTLE bit accessible, this one’s a disaster, and a convincing reason to quit listening to the band. In my opinion, Xiu Xiu is one of those frustrating bands that are capable of great music but rarely deliver. As far as I’m concerned, they reached their peak with Fabulous Muscles, because that album at least had a handful of brilliant frantic-but-listenable songs. Women as Lovers has two, maybe three songs that I can tolerate from beginning to end, and the cover of Under Pressure is the only song I really like. I think I’m pretty much completely over the band at this point, except for the small body of great songs that I love from past albums.

I do appreciate that the band streamed the album online (however briefly), so that I had a chance to listen to the whole thing and pass on purchasing it.

Trisha Yearwood - Heaven, Heartache, and the Power of Love [2007]

This CD bodes very well for Trisha’s continuing collaboration with Big Machine Records. I don’t know how it will do commercially, what with the vagaries of country radio,but, artistically it is, for this listener, an unqualified success.
The CD starts out with the powerhouse vocal performance of the title track.
Trisha lets it rip. Big sound, bold emotion and the power of her voice.
Next she tones it down for a beautiful gentle ballad, “This is me you’re talking to”.
Just Trisha, not even any harmony vocals and a gentle arrangement of strings and piano to accompany her. BEEYOUTEEFUL.
Another up-tempo tune follows. “They Call It Falling For A Reason”. Written by one of Trisha’s favorite tunesmiths, the ultra-talented and prolific Matraca Berg. All about falling in love. (Its a tumbling rush, its a helpless kind of feeling). It is a great song!
“Nothing ‘Bout Memphis” is about a woman who doesn’t want to reveal to her current love, a great passion she shared with someone else.( All he sees is that big muddy river and the ghost of Elvis). Kinda bluesy.
Written by Jessi Alexander who sings harmony vocals on they Call it Falling, but not on the song she penned.
“We Tried” is close to acoustic. Lovely background vocals by Sonya Issacs and
the ubiquitous Wes Hightower. He must have worked with everyone in Nashville:}
Up-tempo tune about giving love and life your best shot. Nice guitar work by Billy Joe Walker, Jr. Trisha’s band member Johnny Garcia is studio musician for most of the tracks.
Yet another gorgeous story song is “Let The Wind Chase You” with Keith Urban.
Just the opposite of “We Tried”. (I don’t want to work for your love, I don’t want to try to be something that your looking for).
Another solid track. Trisha’s vocals and the musical arrangements on this are just
so perfect. Not overproduced at all. You hear Trisha’s voice equally with everything. She is hitting some gorgeous notes. Exquisite phrasing as always.
A stunning song, “The Dreaming Fields”, again by Matraca Berg about America’s Farmers. (Oh the sun rolls down, big as a miracle, and fades from the midwest sky). Wonderful piano work by Steve Nathan.
I guess my favorite out of all these wonderful tracks would be
“Cowboys Are My Weakness” GREAT VOCAL FUN. Delightful lyrics.
(I love to hear my name inside a southern drawl, a man who takes his time, you know what I mean, y’all). I have no idea what country radio is all about anymore, but THIS song should/would be a smash hit as far as this listener is concerned.
A Leslie Satcher/Billy Joe Walker, Jr tune “Help Me” My take on it is the give and take in relationships, how sometimes you can find your strength in your partners love.
“Not A Bad Thing” is about possibilities in love and life after you have lost someone significant in your life. Very breezy delivery for a serious subject but it works.
“Nothing About You Is Good For Me” by Karyn Rochelle who sings background on several tracks. Some good guitar going on here, and some sassy vocals.
(Don’t call my Mama, don’t call my sister, don’t nobody cares whats on your mind). Great driving down the road song to sing along with.
A song with the unlikely title of “Drown Me” written by Jessi Alexander
is just a damn fine country song. I won’t tell you about it. I’ll let Trisha reveal it all for you:}.
They just don’t write them better than this.
That is something Trisha and her team have always done, choose songs with memorable lyric content. This CD is 13 tracks of stellar songwriting.
Trisha ends with a song to her Daddy. “Sing You Back To Me”
(A miracle of page and pen, you’d hear it and be here again).
Just beautiful. Trisha-classy. Just Trisha on vocals, accompanied with acoustic guitar.
I bought it this afternoon and have listened non-stop since.
I admit to being a tiny bit disappointed in Jasper County, so I was really
anxious to see what Big Machine was going to let Trisha do.
I saw Trisha in concert in Sept and she indicated it was a really good experience
working with Big Machine. I think the results sing for themselves.
Awesome recording.

Toby Keith - Toby Keith, Greatest Hits 2 [2004]

Ok, some people are gonna look at this CD and see: TOBY KEITH. Their first thought: arrogant, grandstanding, flag-waving redneck. Others will look at it and think, A brilliant singer/songwriter who isn’t afraid to speak his mind.

Doesn’t matter which side of the fence you lean on. True, this album features Toby’s attitude more than anything else (he’s written better tunes than these–”Stays in Mexico” has to be the worst song he’s ever wrote, even if it is infectious). Two ballads (”When Loves Fades” and “Rock You Baby”) are not included on here. The two ballads that are (”You Shouldn’t Kiss Me Like This,” actually a very well-written song, and “My List,” which Keith didn’t write) are indeed among his better material. The rest of the stuff…”The Angry American” was appropriate for its time (who didn’t want to put a boot in a certain part of Osama bin Laden’s anatomy?), but hasn’t aged too well. “How Do You Like Me Now?!” is now belittled by the attitude of the rest of the material. And there’s nothing from SHOCK ‘N YA’LL…interesting.........

Air Supply - Love Songs [2005]

When I was a freshman in college, my roommate and I used to blast Air Supply every morning before class and again every night before bed.

We had “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love,” “Every Woman in the World,” “Here I Am (Just When I Thought I Was Over You),” “The One That You Love,” “Even the Nights Are Better,” and “Making Love out of Nothing at All” all on repeat that semester.

That might have been fine, except for the fact that this was the early 90s. Lets just say our musical tastes were not appreciated by the rest of the dorm.

Well over a decade later, I can still appreciate the ballads of Air Supply. Listening to each song brings me back to a time when I was more worried about what to wear on a date, than how to scrape together enough money to pay the mortgage. Ah, youth.

The Best of Air Supply: The Ones That You Love is a single-disc collection that includes 13 of Air Supply’s U.S. “Hot 100″ chart singles. The CD tracks are laid out chronologically, starting with two tunes I’d never heard before, “Empty Pages,” and “Love and Other Bruises.”

Although I’m not an “Airhead,” as their fans are called, I still enjoyed being exposed to two songs that are certainly oldies but goodies, yet completely new to me. Sure, they aren’t as polished as the later songs, but I can hear the potential.

In addition to all of my favorites (those I subjected a dorm full of students to), The Best of Air Supply: The Ones That You Love also includes “Chances,” “Sweet Dreams,” “Young Love,” “Two Less Lonely People in the World,” “Just As I Am,” “Power of Love (You Are My Lady),” and “Lonely is the Night.”

For Airheads, or just those who enjoy a tune by Air Supply, this CD covers a decade (1976 to 1986) — probably the best decade Air Supply has had.

I doubt anyone not living under a rock won’t recognize at least one of these tunes. Some of them can still be heard today on “soft rock” radio stations across the country.
